The Central Library
entry
Test Drive Meme

You are in The Central Library… anything can happen here. In fact, the possible can become actuality while you stay here. Things are always changing. Some for the better, some for the worst… it really all depends on one thing. You.

Take a look around, visit the worlds through the book portals, and slowly bring it back to life. The more you do, the better life will get. But be wary, not everything is a fun story and not everything is harmless. Sometimes you will have your life at stake and others you will simply have to enjoy your stay.

You can use RNG to pick a scenario below… or you can pick your own! Whatever delights your fancy and makes you feel at home within the walls of The Central Library.

1. Arrival – You wake up in the main hall. The reception desk is behind you and you know you heard someone whispering “Save us” in your ear… but where are you? The hall gleams and there are many doors amongst the shelves of books. It is rather huge and a walkway circles a second floor… where are you? Well… you might want to ask.

2. Market Place – The Central Library has turned the large conference room into an open gateway to a market place. It shifts and changes along with the Library, but food is always available to those living there as long as the portal is open. Step into a Parisian market of modern day, an open market of the Dark Ages, or even a trading post in the Old West. Go shopping, take a stroll… your imagination is your only limit.

3. Go Out to Dinner – There aren’t many places to go out to eat in The Central Library, in fact, it is best to keep food to the living quarters. But when you go through portals in events, you experience whole new worlds from every era and every place. Possibly you may sit in at the Mad Tea Party or even dine in the Great Hall at Hogwarts. You pick. You decide…

4. Non-Fiction Immersion – It’s raining. Inside. You’ll find that Non-fiction has a way of ruining your day to day life in the Library. Some book in the Non-fiction section has burst open letting out a monsoon of types that only gets worse as you get to that section. Find it, close it… or we all just might float away.

5. Fiction Invasion – Sometimes things slip through. Little things or big things. After all, monsters do hide in the dark corners and in some sections of the grand structure. But this time… the problem is small, small size that is. Pixies have invaded. They are troublesome things… they love to cause problems and make life a little miserable. You need to catch them before they steal you blind… and possibly cause you too much mischief. You may need a net… but please, try not to kill them.

6. Cleaning is Necessary – You are stuck here, you might want to make it home. Being in such disrepair, it needs a little love and care. I’m sure the janitor’s closets have some tools and no harm in trying to pick up books and shelve them. Just be careful… they are rather testy about where they go.

7. A posse ad esse – Anything is possible. This is your Wild Card. Have fun with it!

This Test Drive is Closed.  A new Test Drive will be posted soon.

Okay. He was in a library. That much Owen had been able to put together. It was all the weird stuff that he'd started to discover that he couldn't really figure out.

Like the weird little creatures that were causing all sorts of problems in the fiction section.

He had been wandering around the library, trying to figure out what to do now that he was stuck here instead of back at the park taking care of the issues going on, when a few of the little things had slammed into the back of his head. A pained nose escaped him and he turned around quickly, ready to snap at whoever was responsible when he found himself staring at some odd little...fair tale..things.

"What in the hell.." Before he could really make sense of it they were off, zipping about the section and knocking more books off the shelves. "Hey! Little shits!" Owen manages to duck as another comes zipping at him, the trainer immediately ducking around a shelf to avoid getting pelted.

Just because Steve had spent days slogging through rain and mud didn't mean he liked getting soaked through. Especially when it was raining indoors The Cat - a talking cat... still not the weirdest thing he's ever seen - had told him to find a book before the whole library got flooded.

So far the puddles weren't too deep but the Cat hadn't looked too happy, hissing and pointing toward the area where books on weather should be. Find the right book, close it... That shouldn't be too hard.

Angling his shield over his head to try to protect himself from the wind and rain, Steve moved deeper into the library, hoping that he found it before everyone had to take up swimming.

((ooc: Very new muse. Please forgive any mistakes))

This was not something that Kili had seen before. Tiny little things that moved almost too quickly for him to track, shimmering wings dazzling while high pitched laughter taunted him. If it did not seem wrong to injure something so small, he might be tempted to do more than try to trap the things.

He had searched one of the closets and found a bucket. It would not be the best trap for one of the annoying pixies but at least it should not harm it. Creeping up behind one of the creatures, Kili was about to drop the bucket over it when another pixie grabbed his hair and yanked. Muttering a curse, he swung around to swat the thing away only to have the other pixie swoop down toward his nose.

The annoying little monsters seemed to think that chase the dwarf was a wonderful game until Kili tripped over the remains of a broken bookshelf and landed sprawling. A fit of grated his ears while the bobbed above him, chittering excitedly as Kili slowly untangled himself from the splintered wood.

Evelyn Carnahan | The Mummy | *Cleaning is Necessary*

[personal profile] evelyn_carnahan 2015-06-15 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Could be worse, I suppose."

Evie ran a finger down the spine of a particularly ancient looking volume of poetry. It was so worn that she could barely read the gilded letters pressed into it. She puzzled away until she could find the proper spot for it and then began to eye the stacks for it's rightful place.

"Oh dear."

A high shelf. She had rather a bad time with them before, a few times actually. She hadn't wanted to come back to doing this sort of work after her adventures in the tombs. Though, truthfully, what could compare after seeing a living mummy, curses, possessed servants, deadly scarabs and all the treasure of the ages?

Certainly not book return.

But what needed doing, needed doing. So with spectacles perched on the tip of her nose she began the climb up the ladder to help the book find it's proper home. A slight wobble in the ladder caused a book to fall from it's place, a book by one Edgar Allen Poe, a book which opened on it's way down. A book filled with ghosts, ravens, gold bugs and deathwatch beetles.

'Save us' the whisper was what first indicated he wasn't where he'd been minutes ago. Elrond looked around, tense and ready to fight as he'd been minutes before. Gil-galad had just sent for him, and now...

Where was he? He still had his armor, at least, a small consolation in the field of problems. And asking only got him a few answers. A library. The elf chose an aisle and started walking, grey eyes narrowed warily as he did.

Wildcard - make your own starter! Elrond's from fairly early on during the Last Alliance (aka before he's married~).

The library is, for the most part (aside from some odd experiences), the closest thing to heaven that Lovecraft can envision. Even still, things can happen to prove the place a bit less heavenly.

He's gone into the non-fiction section, doing a little research on hallucinogenic plants, when he hears a loud thunk off to his left. He glances over to see a book has fallen off an upper shelf, dropping spine down so that the pages have fanned open. He reaches to pick it up, intending to replace it on the shelf, when of a sudden, a vine slithers out from between the pages, wrapping its tip around his wrist.

"What the devil...?" he says, trying to pry at the plant with his free hand. But another tendril slides out from between the covers and grabs his wrist...

Hello! [There's a quiver in her voice but she looks around and recognizes that it's a library. Not like the one in Imladris but she can recognize it.]

Is anyone there?

[6]

[Celebrían hates how messy and disorganized the library is. She's not Erestor or Elrond who spend so much time in the library but she enjoys books enough that she can't leave them or the messes.

So she gathers books left out and finds a place to set them as she wipes down shelves and then starts setting them back in place.]

1.

This was not Doriath.

The grand all was nothing like he had ever seen in Menegroth before and the elf looked around with wide eyes. He had always wished to venture outside the Girdle of Melian- to see outside the barriers of their kingdom and he had always wistfully looked at the barrier since his father would never allow him to venture outside.

But now he found himself in a strange land, alone. There was no sign of anyone he knew but Thranduil gathered his strength- he would not allow himself to show weakness even in such a situation.

4.

The rain doesn't seem to be stopping. There is the sound of splashing as he ran down the aisles, wondering if there was anywhere that was remotely dry. He was soaked in a matter of moments but the cold didn't bother him as he attempted to find any kind of shelter from the storm which was inside.

That was odd.

He wasn't watching were he was going as he splashing around another book case, nearly slipping in the process.

[ So the redhead with the eyepatch arrived pretty beaten up and bloodied and possibly with a concussion -- but what does it matter when there are so many books?! He can't possibly read all of them, but that doesn't mean he doesn't intend to try.

But the state of the library is heartbreaking, so Lavi takes on the task of helping to clean up as best he can. In between getting distracted by a beautifully bound tome here and there. And what's the most fascinating is that some of the books... respond to him.

Like right now, when he's trying to put a book on ornithology in with other books on birds and the pages are fluttering in protest. This has happened with other books, and each time Lavi just stares in wonder. He rests the book in one hand and pets the spine. ]

Alec Lightwood | The Mortal Instruments (Combo of 5 & 6)

[personal profile] alec_lightwood 2015-06-16 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Libraries had always been a kind of refuge for Alec. It had been the one room in the Institute that he could go where he usually when he needed time alone or to study the strange little details that no one else seemed interested in. Once he'd moved in with Magnus, the amount of books available had dwindled - he would not allow Magnus to conjure up books for him - but they still offered their own type of comfort and fascination.

Which was one of the reasons he didn't mind being caught up in a magic library, shelving books and trying to put things in order. Occasionally, he'd find some volume that looked interesting, leaning against one of the shelves and thumbing through the book, reading a chapter before putting the book away. Eventually the shelving stopped and Alec hopped up on one of the tables - he hadn't found any solid-looking chairs nearby - and started reading, not noticing that some of the pixies had gotten loose in this area of the Library.

3.
Walking through a portal to see so many options rather than what Ecthelion had been so accustomed to was a mixture of thrilling and an ache that had started in his heart that just grew. There was nothing of Gondolin in the Library, beyond books in and of themselves. Yes, there were a few from Arda here, and being near them helped. But only so much.

Sometimes the elf had to be dragged out, tugged away from what duty he'd taken upon himself in making repairs to their temporary home.

6.
Injured or not, once he'd rested and bound his wounds, Ecthelion set to work. Whispers were all around, but the elf kept working. Tucked books out of the way as he rebuilt shelves, a makeshift weapon tucked close with a sash he'd made. He had to rest more, he knew, but he grew restless and found himself right back on his feet more often than not.

The attack even that morning, if days could be counted, had proven why he needed a way to defend himself and others around him. So many things that he'd never thought possible, yet were fact here.

7. Have at it! Make your own adventure.

[A: Arrival]
It can't be said that he doesn't like a good book now and again, but this place? It's ridiculous. It doesn't feel right, and honestly, all the wars he has pushed himself through, you would think he was ready for the weird and undesirable side adventures. But here he was, standing in a WWII uniform, bullet holes strewn into the clothing, yet the man stood perfectly fine, as if they hadn't hit him.

Abraham is a tall man, standing at 6 foot 4 inches tall, the shoes only helping by a half an inch taller then that. Pulling his helmet off he stood in a main hall way, confused and unsure. One moment in time he was on a battle field, the next he was here. Or he thought that was how it worked. He doesn't remember falling asleep, but here he wakes, lost in a place he didn't know. It was clearly bigger then the white house library, that was for sure.

Whispers in his ear, to save someone, put him on edge, turning to look around, walking to the head desk and frowning as he sits the helmet down. "Hello?"

[B: Non-Fiction Immersion]
He was in books. He was in several books. Non-Fiction. Historical documents. So on. He knows he was, as he's read some of them. As he's checked them out in mild disgust at how off they were at some aspects of his life, and how spot on others were. How they sullied the name of his beautiful wife, or completely forgot the name of one of his children, or only focused on the death of Willy.

He hated Non-fiction now. Oh he used to love it, but now-a-days it wasn't something he cared too much for. This place? It's not helping. The fact that it's raining inside was weird, but he pushed through to the edge of the storm, shading his eyes to try to look into it. "This can't be real..." And yet he knows vampires. He IS one. He knows when things are outlandish and still can be real. This seemed so real. His feet were getting wet as water started to splash out of this hall and towards him.

A book. It was because of a book. Open, no doubt. He didn't care who else was around, though there might be someone in the storm of a book too... but he pushed on, headed into the storm to see if he could reach the center. TO try to close the book.

[ Scenario 4 ]

If he were still human, he'd be absolutely livid. Not that he isn't still angry. Some supernatural force saw fit to pull him from his work, his world, so he could play librarian for some dusty, archaic, and useless collection of books? And of course they couldn't be persuaded to see logic. The informational stores in his positronic brain are far more vast than anything that could be contained in a library, no matter how magical. And do they care? Of course not.

Not so different from humanity, eh? These beings cling to their nostalgia too.

At the very least, he isn't physically uncomfortable. Not from being wet or cold anyway. It's still an annoyance though, and he'd rather not spend the rest of his time here submerged in water (not to mention, he doesn't actually plan to sit idly by while others drown).

The problem is, it is rather difficult to discern where the storm is originating. The wind patterns don't follow any logical course.

"I thought this was the non-fiction section..." He mutters to himself, as he trudges through the knee-deep water, scanning through the swirling raindrops for the source of the monsoon.

No one really told Veena that she shouldn't be trying to catch pixies and not harm them. The black cat is hopping and teleporting around while swatting gleefully at them. Then again even if someone told her, she probably wouldn't listen.

Because cat.

Nearby her human is scratching out a circle in chalk on the ground and occasionally rolling his eyes at the feline. The circle is being rather harder than normal to draw because the pixies keep on smudging bits of it and making him have to start over again.

"You know," he said dryly to one of the pixies in an Irish accent, "If you don't stop this I'm going to get really annoyed and you lot don't want me to be really annoyed."

Nako isn't sure what exactly she's supposed to do here, but her time at Kissuiso has equipped her for cleaning... So that seems like a good place to start. And what place needs more cleaning than the flooding non-fiction section? Water is one of the few places she feels confident; she can totally handle this, right?

She just doesn't bet on the cleaning supplies fighting her every step of the way.

The buckets she's lugging to come catch rainwater strain in the other direction. "Come--on--!"

She's so absorbed in her struggle that she doesn't notice you until she nearly backs into you. Immediately she springs away, bowing her head. "I-I'm sorry!"

Waking up in one while dressed in her Batgirl suit was an entirely different story, though. Barbara raised an eyebrow beneath her cowl and stood up, looking around, adjusting her short, scalloped cape.

It was a sad library, though, with books every which of a way and strange voices coming from somewhere she couldn't see. It sounded like they wanted her to save them, but she didn't know how she could do that. She wasn't sure she was strong or brave or good enough to save anyone.

But she could help fix things.

(After Arrival:)
When he arrived he was still in his gear Endor gear, the forest camo print coat over his black vest, white shirt and Corellian blood strip brown pants. His blaster, at his side had suddenly been drawn and he was on the ready. At first he saw nothing but a library of books... but then there was a person who greeted him. He couldn't place what planet the man was from, but that didn't matter. The blaster was put away but not locked down.

After a conversation with the Librarian Han decided this wasn't an imperial trap, but it might as well be. He was brought here to help... with books. Who used books anymore anyhow? he knows some planets did, but most people out in space adapted to other forms by now. You wouldn't get THIS kind of problem if they were all data and less paper, would you.

He has agreed to help, for the most part. He feels like he has to help, or be stuck here. It doesn't mean he has to like it, correct?

(Market Place:)
For Han, walking through a portal and being somewhere else is a bit different. Back home, anywhere back home, they didn't have transporters this advanced yet. At least not that he himself has experienced. There were no magic portals to mystical places. Everything was pretty real (for the most part). This? Stepping from the Library to an Arabian market place (What even was Arabian anyhow? What planet was that?) was ... new. The heat felt like Tatooine (or any number of desert planets he's been to) but the set up was brighter, more colorful and lively.

He stood there at the mouth of the portal, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand. "Huh..." It LOOKED like a market place, but not one he had ever seen before. "I bet her Highnessness would have liked this..." He said to no one at all.
