The Central Library
entry
Test Drive Meme

You are in The Central Library… anything can happen here. In fact, the possible can become actuality while you stay here. Things are always changing. Some for the better, some for the worst… it really all depends on one thing. You.

Take a look around, visit the worlds through the book portals, and slowly bring it back to life. The more you do, the better life will get. But be wary, not everything is a fun story and not everything is harmless. Sometimes you will have your life at stake and others you will simply have to enjoy your stay.

You can use RNG to pick a scenario below… or you can pick your own! Whatever delights your fancy and makes you feel at home within the walls of The Central Library.

1. Arrival – You wake up in the main hall. The reception desk is behind you and you know you heard someone whispering “Save us” in your ear… but where are you? The hall gleams and there are many doors amongst the shelves of books. It is rather huge and a walkway circles a second floor… where are you? Well… you might want to ask.

2. Market Place – The Central Library has turned the large conference room into an open gateway to a market place. It shifts and changes along with the Library, but food is always available to those living there as long as the portal is open. Step into a Parisian market of modern day, an open market of the Dark Ages, or even a trading post in the Old West. Go shopping, take a stroll… your imagination is your only limit.

3. Go Out to Dinner – There aren’t many places to go out to eat in The Central Library, in fact, it is best to keep food to the living quarters. But when you go through portals in events, you experience whole new worlds from every era and every place. Possibly you may sit in at the Mad Tea Party or even dine in the Great Hall at Hogwarts. You pick. You decide…

4. Non-Fiction Immersion – It’s raining. Inside. You’ll find that Non-fiction has a way of ruining your day to day life in the Library. Some book in the Non-fiction section has burst open letting out a monsoon of types that only gets worse as you get to that section. Find it, close it… or we all just might float away.

5. Fiction Invasion – Sometimes things slip through. Little things or big things. After all, monsters do hide in the dark corners and in some sections of the grand structure. But this time… the problem is small, small size that is. Pixies have invaded. They are troublesome things… they love to cause problems and make life a little miserable. You need to catch them before they steal you blind… and possibly cause you too much mischief. You may need a net… but please, try not to kill them.

6. Cleaning is Necessary – You are stuck here, you might want to make it home. Being in such disrepair, it needs a little love and care. I’m sure the janitor’s closets have some tools and no harm in trying to pick up books and shelve them. Just be careful… they are rather testy about where they go.

7. A posse ad esse – Anything is possible. This is your Wild Card. Have fun with it!

[Carefully grooming a paw, he studied the runes on the skull. There were a few patrons that would be interested in this particular being.]

I have not seen Mr. Dresden yet, but that doesn't mean he won't arrive.

[He was curious about the wizard. He caused so many natural laws to act peculiarly. It would be fascinating to see the effects first hand, or paw to be more accurate considering the Cat's form.]

Could there be problems if you are here and your boss is elsewhere?

[Bob takes a second to think about this and nods.]

It could be a problem. He's deep into some serious stuff right now, but Harry's good at thinking on the fly. He'll be fine.

If Mr. Dresden needed you, then the Head Librarian would not have brought you here.

[Not even the Cat's curiosity regarding Bob would not have allowed for it. The Head Librarian might indulge the Cat's whims from time to time, but he would not take such risks.]

Another cannot become your boss while the two of you are separated?

Actually anyone who picks me up can use me. I've been passed from hand to hand for over 1,000 years. Harry is just the latest in my long line of owners.

[Bob takes in the faded view of things and sighs.]

Looks like your head honcho needs me a little bit more than Harry does.

Is that something we should discourage?

[The lashing tail slows to a thoughtful rhythm. It would be best to avoid trouble if they could.]

We could find ways to keep you from being handed off to the wrong sort of being.

Your help would be appreciated. Your knowledge bridges two areas of the Library and there will be those who see magic as Non-Fiction arriving soon.

I'm pretty good at discouraging people myself but a little extra help would be worth it. I'd be happy to help anyone who needed it provided I get a good romance novel now and then.

I will let the Head Librarian know that we should keep an eye on who becomes too interested in the knowledge you hold.

[Fiction is not something that the Cat normally deals with but he does have access to those volumes even if they aren't in his section of the Library.]

Here you can have access to as many as you wish.

[Tipping his head, the cat watched the lights that illuminated the skull's eyes.]

How exactly do you read them?
harrys_skull: (Default)

[personal profile] harrys_skull 2015-06-19 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)

Thanks cat Harry has been careful but I don't want a mortal getting into trouble.

I kind of absorb them. Then I can read them inside the skull.

enlightenedfeline: (Superstition)

[personal profile] enlightenedfeline 2015-06-21 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome. We don't want that sort of trouble here. There is enough for us to deal with without those sorts of complications. There are some magic users here but they should know better than to fool with something they do not understand.

[The Cat didn't trust human motives but he did trust the Head Librarian. If he believed that Bob would be safe here, then he would be.]

Absorb their content or absorb the book itself?
harrys_skull: (Default)

[personal profile] harrys_skull 2015-06-22 01:39 am (UTC)(link)

You'd think do but humans mortal or otherwise can be a bit forgetful...or they just don't care.

[Bob chuckles at this.]

Contents only...Harry gets touchy about library books going missing.

enlightenedfeline: (You almost impressed me...)

[personal profile] enlightenedfeline 2015-06-23 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
They are the same way regarding science as well. The Librarians hoped that the patrons would be cautious with the knowledge available but there will be temptations. If they push too far, or try to do things with you that they shouldn't, there will be consequences.

We would get touchy about that as well. [But there's a hint of humor in the Cat's voice] If you tell me what authors you like, I can attempt to find them.
harrys_skull: (Default)

[personal profile] harrys_skull 2015-06-24 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)

Good to know.

[Bob's voice takes on the same note of amusement.]

I could see how you would. I'm a big fan of Nora Roberts and Nicholas Sparks.

enlightenedfeline: (Superstition)

[personal profile] enlightenedfeline 2015-06-25 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Those I can find. Along with others.

[Flicking his tail, the Cat looks amused, knowing how strange the two of them look together.]

I'm pleased that we have someone else here that isn't human shaped. They seem to think that is the only form that can hold intelligence.
harrys_skull: (Default)

[personal profile] harrys_skull 2015-06-26 12:08 am (UTC)(link)

[Bob laughs.]

That's humans for you magical or otherwise. I've been around a long time and honestly met creatures with a lot more sense and twice the brains.

enlightenedfeline: (You almost impressed me...)

[personal profile] enlightenedfeline 2015-06-27 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I have not met them, but I do know of their existence. My experience outside of the Library is limited.

[Not that he minds that. The Head Librarian needs him here.]

Some of those beings may agree to visit. We already have those who are not quite human as patrons.
harrys_skull: (Default)

[personal profile] harrys_skull 2015-06-29 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)

Well lucky you. I have to deal with mortals more than I would like. A break now and then would be nice.

[Bob sighs.]

Gonna be a lot of new auras to learn to read.

enlightenedfeline: (You almost impressed me...)

[personal profile] enlightenedfeline 2015-07-04 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That might be something that we can help with as well. If you wish. The Head Librarian and I are trying to make things as hospitable as possible for our patrons.

The others should not mind if you read auras but I would appreciate it if you did not attempt that on the Librarians. We are... different and I am not certain what you would see or what it might do if that knowledge was accessed.

[personal profile] harrys_skull 2015-07-11 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)

Don't worry I don't read without asking anymore. It's rude and I have accidentally seen things I didn't want to before. Harry Dresden is the only one I have blanket permission with.
