The Central Library
entry
Test Drive Meme

You are in The Central Library… anything can happen here. In fact, the possible can become actuality while you stay here. Things are always changing. Some for the better, some for the worst… it really all depends on one thing. You.

Take a look around, visit the worlds through the book portals, and slowly bring it back to life. The more you do, the better life will get. But be wary, not everything is a fun story and not everything is harmless. Sometimes you will have your life at stake and others you will simply have to enjoy your stay.

You can use RNG to pick a scenario below… or you can pick your own! Whatever delights your fancy and makes you feel at home within the walls of The Central Library.

1. Arrival – You wake up in the main hall. The reception desk is behind you and you know you heard someone whispering “Save us” in your ear… but where are you? The hall gleams and there are many doors amongst the shelves of books. It is rather huge and a walkway circles a second floor… where are you? Well… you might want to ask.

2. Market Place – The Central Library has turned the large conference room into an open gateway to a market place. It shifts and changes along with the Library, but food is always available to those living there as long as the portal is open. Step into a Parisian market of modern day, an open market of the Dark Ages, or even a trading post in the Old West. Go shopping, take a stroll… your imagination is your only limit.

3. Go Out to Dinner – There aren’t many places to go out to eat in The Central Library, in fact, it is best to keep food to the living quarters. But when you go through portals in events, you experience whole new worlds from every era and every place. Possibly you may sit in at the Mad Tea Party or even dine in the Great Hall at Hogwarts. You pick. You decide…

4. Non-Fiction Immersion – It’s raining. Inside. You’ll find that Non-fiction has a way of ruining your day to day life in the Library. Some book in the Non-fiction section has burst open letting out a monsoon of types that only gets worse as you get to that section. Find it, close it… or we all just might float away.

5. Fiction Invasion – Sometimes things slip through. Little things or big things. After all, monsters do hide in the dark corners and in some sections of the grand structure. But this time… the problem is small, small size that is. Pixies have invaded. They are troublesome things… they love to cause problems and make life a little miserable. You need to catch them before they steal you blind… and possibly cause you too much mischief. You may need a net… but please, try not to kill them.

6. Cleaning is Necessary – You are stuck here, you might want to make it home. Being in such disrepair, it needs a little love and care. I’m sure the janitor’s closets have some tools and no harm in trying to pick up books and shelve them. Just be careful… they are rather testy about where they go.

7. A posse ad esse – Anything is possible. This is your Wild Card. Have fun with it!

"There was a time when curiosity saved me from a premature fate, but this wasn't the case," Lovecraft says, his voice slightly harsh from the pain and shock. The vines might tighten a bit before relenting, which gets a hiss of pain from the human, and he'll try to shake himself free.

"Damaged... and so... this place would summon those most at home, if I understand this?" he asks.

"Curiosity can save a being's life but it should not replace caution. Especially in this place." Taking one last swipe at the vines, the Cat glared at them until they slid grudgingly back into the book. Just to be sure that they remained inside, the cat sat down on the volume, knowing that the things inside would not dare to annoy him further.

"In a way, yes. Those who would be comfortable here and those who have skills that might be necessary." Studying Lovecraft for a moment, the Cat began washing one paw. "We do not want the unwilling here so being at home here is beneficial. If someone is here, they have decided to help preserve our work."

He'll sink to the floor, legs folding awkwardly under him as he rubs his arms, trying to get the circulation going again in them. "I do seek to avoid harmful creatures, but it seems they seek me out when I least expect them," he says. "My arrival might have been unprecedented and even unwanted, but... the destination is a most welcome one, the manner of place in which I would gladly make a dwelling, if allowed, since I am both an avid reader and a writer, though I hope my talent at the latter is equal to the former..."

"We will have to be careful of that. We do not wish for patrons to be harmed even if that does seem unavoidable." Lowering his paw, he tipped his head to one side, trying to access the damage the vines might have caused. "Were you hurt by the vines?"

Purring in approval, the Cat hopped off the book to get a better look at Lovecraft's arms. "We do appreciate your help but remember that some books will not be available for study. We cannot allow people to cheat and learn things that will upset their world's balance. I believe that you and Fiction would get along well. She is the one that can best discuss the talents of writers. I am too fact orientated to judge fairly."

"The circulation in my arms is still coming back: my hands have gone pins and needles," he says, undoing his cuffs, pushing up his sleeves, revealing some marks where the vines pressed into his skin, though it's not broken at least.

"I always did seem more in my element when it came to fiction, though one sometimes finds the best inspiration from facts and the questions that they incite," he admits. "What is it that they say, to stick with what you know when you are writing?" he adds, slightly self-deprecating

Scrutinizing the area carefully, the Cat lightly batted at Lovecraft's fingers to bring them to a level he could see better. "The plant wasn't one of the more dangerous varieties. The ones in fiction are more devious. Unless you are allergic, the sensation should fade.

"Much that was thought of as fiction is now fact and vise versa." Purring thoughtfully, he continued gently batting at Lovecraft's fingers and wrist to help restore the circulation as best he could with only paws to work with. "Does that mean that you have experienced what you have written about?"

"I do have a slight allergy to tree pollen, but this seemed to be a vine, not something arboreal," he says, lowering his hand closer to the feline, and he might smile a little, clearly pleased. There might be red marks on his skin, where the vine squeezed him, but no sign of blood.

"As a matter of fact, I have seen some of the strange and eldritch beings of which I've written," he says. "I have sighted ghouls in some long-forgotten cemeteries in Massachusetts, and as a youngster, I saw a satyr in a wooded area behind the family house."
