April Event - A Day in the Life of…

A Day in the Life of…

Not every day is a huge adventure. In fact, some days are just like all the others. Granted, life in The Library is not exactly ‘normal’, but there are days just like any other. Which means the small tasks still needs to be done. Pick a job, carry out your life… What is your everyday life like in The Central Library?

1. You have started a job or trade and help out in any way you can. Maybe you are teaching defense. Maybe you are simply learning it. You will need it! After all, just because there is nothing big happening doesn’t mean there might not be something like a bugbear waiting around the corner you’ll need to kill.

2. The books are scattering like roaches when you turn the light on! It’s horrible! They seem to find their current nesting spots on their shelves unsuitable! It needs to be cleaned up and the books need to be put back where they belong. Mind you… they are skittish and they will run from you!

3. People need to eat around here… are you a good cook? Some really aren’t… so why not help out with dinner? Nothing like planning for a… sort of… family meal. If you can’t cook, go to the market and find ingredients. Doing a little shopping is a nice way to pass the day.

4. Maybe you are the dodging work type. Maybe you really didn’t want to clean shelves or work. Well! There are always the baths or having tea in one of the atriums. (You could always play some pranks on the other patrons as well. It’s all in fun and getting to know each other, of course.)

5. Is work and cooking too mild for you? Training is simply not needed, you say? Then go hunting for monsters in the darker places of the Library. Just be careful not to wander too far… it’s easy to get lost in the darkness.

6. With the arrival of great pets comes great responsibility! And the need for pet-sitters who are willing to make sure they’re all happy and healthy. Walk the dogs! Play with the cats! Watch out for the ducks! And keep them out of trouble if you can.

7. Wild card! Feel free to come up with something else to fill up your day and have fun (or not!).

[Books moving around like bugs. Okay. It was strange but he'd dealt with stranger things here before.

Dropping a foot down on top of one of the scuttling books, Owen frowned and leaned down to pick it up. It definitely wasn't pleased with being touched but now that he had it the thing wasn't going to be getting away and a quick glance at the spine told him where it belonged. The book was quickly tucked back into place before he went after another, catching it with his foot again and managing to snag another with his hand.

This was no worse than having to wrangle compsognathus when they got lose. At least the books didn't have teeth and a pack mentality.

He hoped.]

[Despite not having any ammo for it, Owen had slung his rifle over his shoulder all the same. Having it gave him that sense of safety that he'd become accustomed to back at the park and it just helped ease any worries he might have.

Kronos had said that the darkness was creeping into the library more and more and he wasn't pleased to hear that. That meant there were probably a lot more things wandering around than there should be. And given that he was use to this and things like, oh you know, dinosaurs, he had decided to do some scouting in the darker, abandoned areas of the library.

Crouching at the end of one of the aisles, Owen peered around the corner as he attempted to find the source of the noise he'd been following for the better part of an hour now. It was large, whatever it was, and had been shuffling through the books and had even knocked down several of the shelving units but try as he might Owen had yet to catch sight of it.

Whatever it was needed to be stopped, though, before it got to the other parts of the library.]

[Wildcard]

[Cooking really wasn't his thing. Neither was pet sitting. Sure he loved animals but there was only so much he could take in terms of walking dogs and cleaning up after cats and ducks.

Which is why he was in the non-fiction section, reorganizing and cleaning up things there. It had been his favorite section of the library the first time he'd visited and that hadn't changed now. His rifle was propped up against one of the shelves as he sorted through the books, putting them back where they were supposed to be and making sure everything was facing the same way. Sure it was tedious and really it wasn't doing anything to help anyone but it helped him clear his head. It gave him something to focus on that kept his hands and mind busy.

That, and he couldn't be blamed if he stopped every now and then to flip through one of the books, reading through different sections before the books were placed back on the shelf. For as much of a hands on, outdoors-y type as he was, Owen did like reading.]

[As much as he pretended not to, he was fond of Owen. He helped the Head Librarian in ways that the Cat couldn't. He was one of the few beings that the Cat had met during his long life that could make his friend listen. That was a rare enough skill to earn the feline's respect. The fact that Owen treated others as equals no matter their size or shape was another reason to like the human.

Purring softly as he watches Owen, the Cat saunters over to him before going to the rifle. Sitting up on his hind legs, he sniffs at it thoughtfully.]

Are you attached to this sort of weapon?

[It's one of the few firearms that had entered the Library and the Cat has been curious to why others hadn't brought similar weapons. Perhaps the more archaic ones were more useful.

Setting his paws back on the floor, he looks around to see if anyone is nearby before starting to twine between Owen's legs like the feline he resembles.]

I know what you did for our friend.

[There was little reason to elaborate on who that might be and the Cat rarely says the Head Librarian's name in the main areas of the Library.]
theraptorsquad: (That was..not convincing)

[Owen finishes sliding the book he's holding onto the shelf before his gaze shifts to the cat, a fond grin touching his lips. He hadn't seen the feline since he returned to this place and he was glad to see him. He'd managed to touchbase with several people within the library since his return but not the feline.

So this? This was a meeting he'd been hoping for.]

Sort of. It's mostly a familiarity sort of thing. I'm just use to having it and using it.

[Military background and all. Add that into his current profession as raptor wrangler and you get someone who relies heavily on a gun in desperate times.

He steps back from the shelf just as the feline comes over to him and starts twining between his legs, a bubbling, soft laugh of a sound escaping him.]

I just did what I thought needed to be done. I was worried.

You do know that it can be used here. Cautiously of course.

[The Cat curved his back into an arch while continuing threading himself between Owen's feet. It's a gesture that few would ever see and even fewer would be part of. No matter how much he might snark at Owen, he was someone that eventually the Cat might think of as a friend... while denying such things since he must have the protector role in this place.]

Unless you do not want the weapon to work here.

[Lightly pawing at Owen's shoe, the Cat saunters far enough away to look up at him.]

I was worried too.

[It's something the Cat hates to admit but Owen needs to know how dangerous the situation had become.]

He was gone for so long that I began to wonder if he had been lost. You did what was needed and he allowed it which is more than any other patron, or even I, had been able to manage.

I figured. Just didn't want to draw the attention of anything that might be lurking around.

[But if the situation ever did call for it, he'd use it without hesitation.

The Cat's actions have him itching to reaching down and run his fingers through the feline's fur but even with the gesture he's unsure if he should or not. It would still be a bit demeaning wouldn't it?]

Only if necessary. I figure there are other ways I can fend things off without resorting to a gun just yet.

[He kneels down when the feline saunters back a bit, arms resting on his knees as he frowns softly.]

Not going to lie, when he told me how long he'd been resting I got pretty worried. I'm glad everything held together though. [A pause before he sighs.] Even if there does seem to be some darker areas of the library now.
unfavorableinstigation: It is dark, but Nita is inside reading a book. (Dark)

5, if that's alright by you? ^^

[personal profile] unfavorableinstigation 2016-04-12 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Nita hadn't taken the route Owen had, not in the slightest. She was really wishing for one of her wizard-lights right now, but considering the structure of the Library that might have been too much of a risk.

"Oof," Nita said, quickly pushing herself away from the shelf she'd almost slammed herself against.

Hopefully the noise wasn't too loud...
theraptorsquad: (That can't be good)

Of course!

[personal profile] theraptorsquad 2016-04-12 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The noise was loud enough that it caught Owen's attention and the man paused where he was, staring down the center row of books.

It took him a moment to decide what he wanted to do but he finally pushed away from the shelf to start in the direction the sound had come from, keeping his steps light and trying to make as little noise as possible. He edged around one of the shelves, a hand lightly touching the shelf itself to guide him along, other hand resting on his rifle as the lights started to grow dimmer.

Figures he'd end up in a darker part of the library searching for a random sound.

The trainer reached the end of the row he was in and turned to start checking down the other only to stop himself abruptly as he came face to face--sort of, given how dark it was--with another figure. The hand he had on his rifle tightened but he didn't swing it around to draw it, free hand held out as if to ward the person back.

"Who the hell are you?"
unfavorableinstigation: It is dark, but Nita is inside reading a book. (Reading Indoors)

Lack of light on Nita's part is due to IC unsurity if wizardry can be used in the Library. ^^;

[personal profile] unfavorableinstigation 2016-04-13 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Nita winced.

Really should have asked someone for a flashlight, she thought.

"It's Nita. I know it's the dark-infested part of the Library and I really shouldn't be out here alone, but I wanted to help," she whispered in a rush, likely more harshly than she would have liked out of anger at herself.

"I have a spell to make a light, but I'm not sure using it in here is a good idea!"
theraptorsquad: (Come again?)

[personal profile] theraptorsquad 2016-04-25 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Nita. Wait. He'd spoken to her on the network hadn't he?

"I'm Owen--I think we spoke. Briefly," he murmurs softly, relaxing his grip on his rifle as his freehand lowers. He can hear that anger in her voice and it gets a frown out of the older man but anything he might want to say on that subject is thrown off by her next statement.

"Spell?"

She could use magic?
unfavorableinstigation: Nita looking right, holding a book. (I'm In The Book)

[personal profile] unfavorableinstigation 2016-04-25 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Right."

She could recognize him more easily, now.

"Yeah - I'm a wizard. The light-spell's one of the first I learned, if not the most useful. I've memorized it too, it's just-"

She gestured around them.

"What if it interferes with these, what we're supposed to be protecting?"
