The Winter Ball
The Winter Ball

As the Library prepares for the turning of the seasons, another of its rooms opens to the patrons. It is different than the others with a wide, sweeping marble floor inlaid with patterns of holly and snowflakes that is uncluttered by books and shelves. Music drifts through the hall, hinting that the patrons should dance. Do not worry about the gently falling snow; none will slip upon the marble unless they wish to do so.
Tables are scattered well away from the dance floor to allow patrons to gather and talk in small, intimate groups. Along one wall is a table stacked high with holiday foods from dozens of different realities. Evergreens decorated with globes of colored lights and frost remind the patrons that not everything fades with winter's cold. Presents can be found beneath the decorated boughs. Everywhere is a reminder of holidays from worlds near and far, some grounded in reality and some that patrons thought only existed in imagination.
The Library welcomes each patron and wishes each to enjoy an evening of music and festivities. Happy Winter Holidays to all who have answered the Head Librarian's invitation!
Prompts
The Dance Floor
1. Filling Your Dance Card. Each patron will find a dance card in his or her possession. Each being is encouraged to fill the card by dancing with five different people. Those who do will find a surprise waiting for them beneath one of the evergreen. (See note below)
2. Dancing on Air. Sometimes it feels like a song will sweep you off your feet. During this musical number, that can be literally true. While in the midst of a dance, patrons might notice that they're feeling lighter than usual and their feet barely touch the floor. That's because they've started to float above the dance floor. It may be unsettling at first but once the song ends the patrons be earthbound again.
3. The SnowBALL. Someone forgot that this is a formal dance, not a playground. When a patron steps on a certain pattern of snowflakes on the floor, snowballs will begin to fly. Patrons shouldn't worry too much if they in the middle of the action. These are magic snowballs and will not ruin gowns and suits. They can even be lobbed at other patrons if someone is feeling mischievous.
Mingling
4. Eat, Drink, and be Merry! The food at the buffet looks tempting and this time there are not magical side effects (except what might happen in the reality that the food is from). Enjoy a few treats from another world. Enjoy a drink or two... just remember that someone most likely has spiked the punch and that could have exciting or disastrous results!
5. Don't be a Wallflower. People who stay too long in one spot will find small winter flowers and leaves growing around their feet. These are harmless, but encouraging patrons to mingle and move and socialize with each other; especially dance.
Winter is the Darkest Time of the Year
6. In the Dark of the Night. If a patron wanders too far away from the main group, he or she will notice that the candles don't seem as bright and the fairy lights seem to fade. The Library is dark, darker than normal. Nothing more illuminating than a candle, except where Patrons gather. Those who wander away might find themselves lost and need someone to rescue them from the shadows that linger beyond the ball.
7. Tick Tock. In one corner of the ballroom, patrons might notice an item that looks strangely out of place. The old grandfather clock is decorated with scenes of different winter holidays that seem to draw the eye... and the unwary patron. Get too close and the clock case will spring open and a boggart will appear. Those familiar with a certain wizarding world might know the right spell that will banish the spirit and find themselves able to cast it with ease. Those who don't may find themselves confronting their greatest fears.
8. The Mirror of Dreams... and Nightmares. Like the Mirror of Erised, the mirror will show a patron the most desperate desire of a person's heart. At first this may seem innocent but some will be unable to look away and later... The forces that inhabit the Library may take an interest in what patrons see and these visions might come back to haunt them later.
((Note: The dance card prompt will allow players to earn extra points for the event. If a patron tags with prompt 1 and has five patrons tag their entry and the player returns those tags, they will earn extra points. The Cat will be available for dances if someone adds an ooc not to their prompt. Special thanks to

What was it with this place and magical plants?
"Excuse me. I'm sorry to interrupt, but I wanted to let you know if you stand still too long flowers will grow around your feet. And I don't mean that as in you're dress is like a pretty purple flower so flowers will grow at your feet."
He pointed down and smiled a little when he noticed plants had already started to grow.
"Although, your dress really is pretty and I don't mean that as a pick up line."

1--Dancing
"Definitely a bit different seeing someone in person than over a video huh?" The voice is familiar, and the face...sort of is. It's missing a bandanna though, from their video-chat. Older teen male, lanky-athletic frame, at least Casey had found something appropriate to wear. The smile on his face is playful too. "Sara, right?"
[OOC: Please ignore the belt-buckle in the image picture. Otherwise it's a good example of what Casey's wearing. No bandanna, which means there are two fine-fine scars semi-visible. One on his right eyebrow at the edge, and one up near the middle of his forehead disappearing under hair.]

Grant Ward + Open.
[It's a positive night, and it's one that he's determined to enjoy. His brother's here, there'll be a family reunion soon enough, but he's got Kara's hand in his and then he's off to get them some punch. Once that's done however there's a very handsome man who's more then ready to mingle.]
Dancing on Air + Snowballs, for Kara.
[Grant Ward is thinking about those moments that you get once in a lifetime. Those moments that you have where everything is good and the gross feeling in your chest of being - disconnected - is gone. With Kara in his arms he's unaware - seemingly - that their feet have moved several inches off the floor.
Pressing a kiss to her neck he holds her close.]
We need to set a date for our wedding. Is it bad that I'm thinking February?
Amery Vallet | OTA
It had been a long time since he'd been to a ball like this, and he almost wished he had his dress uniform instead of his flight uniform. He still looked sharp, as it was; his flight uniform was comprised of a high-collared dark blue jacket with silver and brass buttons, and gold epaulettes, slim white trousers, and high black boots. He'd left his flight gloves in his room, instead fiddling with his white kid gloves, adjusting them and tugging on them.
His dance card was empty so far. Back in Volstov he'd never had trouble approaching anyone for a dance, but at home he'd had Rook or Jeannot to talk to, goad each other on into approaching a beautiful woman. But here, everyone was a stranger, and there was no Dragon Corps to impress. He cleared his throat, shifting from one foot to another, and tried to catch someone, anyone's, eye to see if they would be interested.
5 - Wallflower
He only noticed the flowers creeping around his boots when he tried to move his feet and met resistance. Frowning, he tried again, but was afraid to tear the plants. They didn't seem to be deadly, but they also didn't appear normal.
"Erm," he said uncertainly, "Has this happened to anyone else?"
4 - Eat, Drink
Thank lord there was food. He'd tugged off one of his gloves to eat, so he wouldn't get crumbs or other food on them as he chowed down on snacks. And helped himself to some punch. After his third glass, he realized it was spiked, but it was too late for him to care, so he helped himself to a fourth. On the plus side, a drunk or tipsy Amery was an Amery far less uptight.
"Excuse me," he said to whoever happened to be nearest to him at the moment, his somewhat heavy Volstovic accent, resembling a blend of Russian and French, almost heavy enough now to mangle his words a little, "Has anyone ever told you that you have beautiful eyes?"

Jace | 4 | This should be fun!
He was working on his fourth glass of punch and still had room for plenty more. Once he'd realized someone had added something nice to the boringly sweet liquid he'd finished the first three glasses before wandering over to the food. After everything that had happened to him he thought he had a right to a few drinks.
"It's a curse really. Blond, muscular, and beautiful golden eyes."
He popped some shrimp into his mouth and regarded the stranger thoughtfully.
"You know the punch is not really punch?"

1 (Female Goddess-Wolf ok? I have ideas, if it helps.)
At other times, the white-wolf moved gracefully through and around people, observing and scenting. The red-markings on her fur showed easily in the Library's atmosphere, as did the flicker of the solar disc flaring with the sun's corona that occasionally appeared above her back. Dark eyes wide, intelligent, more than a wolf, and a faint scent. Sniffing, then moving towards it.
Coming to a stop by the nervous gentleman. His clothing was unfamiliar, but quite striking. Even in his nerves, he held himself like a soldier though. Unlike anything Ammy had seen. A flicker of her tail, words appearing as if inked in the air before they faded. Japanese, then fading to a language he could understand. Would you like a partner, oh Soldier?

Thomas Ward | OTA
He wasn't exactly big on dancing, and he'd never been to an event this fancy before. It was a little overwhelming, and he wasn't even dressed properly for it. He wouldn't have known how to dress for something like this without some sort of explanation, and he didn't have a whole lot of money to buy anything with. He made an effort at least, put on something nice, and then hung near the sidelines while he tried to figure out who he was going to ask to dance--and how he was going to do it.
4 - Eat, Drink
Strategically, Thomas had placed himself in a seat near the buffet table, though the rest of his own table was empty. There was just him, a plate of food, and his second cup of punch. His dance card was discarded (ha) on the table next to his plate, more or less forgotten about for now.

Thea Queen l OTA
Thea had decided to accept dances with anyone who asked, ladies would of course be platonic. She figured it was the first of many steps to facing the ghosts inside her head and soul.
Wallflower
At one point however her demons went into overdrive so Thea headed to the wall for a breather. But after awhile a bank of flowers was growing just around her shoes. "Strange but an interesting strange." she admits.
Eat, Drink and Be Merry
During another breather Thea wandered to the food table and snagged some cookies and some tea.
Tick Tock
Thea picked the worst time to wander past the clock, springing out a little version of Ra's Al Ghul and a reminder of her past as an addict and angry at the world party girl. "Not her anymore!" she kept whispering, trying to make the memories go away.

Walking over to her, he smiled as he held out his hand. "Would you like to dance?"

Sebastian | Wallflower & Drinks | OTA
But a ball was something special and he did try to choose something appropriate. A simple, but stylish black Jacket, white dress shirt, and a black tie. The same for his Pants , fitted perfectly to his frame.
As much as he loved his clothes and as much as they helped him feel better there was still the room full of people he had never met and despite being a musician he couldn't dance. So he grabbed himself two cups of punch and found a quiet spot away from everything where he could watch.

The color looked severe but it emphasized the color of his eyes. Maybe not as much as the blues Izzy and Magnus tried to get him into but he preferred black tonight. He wanted to impress on his terms, not with the hints from others.
Eventually, he spotted Sebastian, skirting the dance floor to make his way to his boyfriend. Eyeing the two glasses of punch, he arched an eyebrow at Sebastian. "The party isn't that bad, Sebastian."

Sebastian | 8
He was smiling and talking to someone who suddenly appeared. It was his father. Laughing and smiling at him, touching his shoulder and they were together, sitting down at the dinning room table. His father was looking at him, seeing him, and he was happy. He wasn't yelling or crying. His father wasn't angry or disappointed.
It was as if nothing had ever changed between them. They were father and son and it was so clear in his fathers expression that he loved Sebastian. He wondered if maybe this is what his life would have been like if he weren't gay. If he hadn't fallen in love with Jack or been more like the son his father had hoped for. Was this what it would be like if he had been born right instead of wrong?
In that moment he didn't care. His father was hugging him and looking at him the way he'd missed for so long The way he had when he too young and his father was still his father and would pick him up as soon as he came through the door after work, asking him about his day. He would read to him at night and encourage him and play with him. His father had loved him and he still loved him.
Sebastian placed his hand on the mirror, wanting to feel what his reflection felt, wanting to be apart of what he was seeing. He wanted so much for his father to hug him and tell him it was okay.
"Father! Dad! Daddy! I'm right here! It's me. It's me. I'm right here."
Re: Sebastian | 8
One scent though--so familiar and yet.. It caught her, and yes--faint, diluted, but there. Nippon, and Ammy followed her nose, making her way carefully through the crowd. Near enough to observe the young man, and a large looking glass. The scent came from him, and the Goddess-wolf recognized it now.
He was from Nippon; somehow, in his blood. One of her children, so far as she was concerned. No matter how far away, or how faint, his blood was from Nippon and so she would watch out for him. With that puzzle solved, other scents came to her from him. Distress, deep sadness and pain, and longing...
Moving closer around to his side, soft-padded footsteps to come and sit by him, looking between him and the glass. She did not see what he saw, only the young man reaching out to press his hand against the glass. A soft 'whuff' to gain his attention, if she could.
Casey Jones--Open to all (Other prompts can be requested too)
Casey hadn't been fond of the idea of dressing up. Reminded him of too many stuffy-functions that had required it before. Besides, he didn't have a lot of clothing here, and certainly nothing that nice. But then he and Sebastian had gotten to talking, and the bookworm was so excited. Then horrified at Casey's reaction to dressing up, and even more so when it was clear Casey...wasn't sure how to. This was somewhat different than formal school dances, and he already wasn't fond of those.
Darn Bookworm had puppy-dog eyes and a pout to rival Casey's little sister. Off to the market, and Casey would've rather fought monsters. Eventually though, a compromise and something had been found. Bright red blazer (with some silver-trim), over white shirt--and Casey'd discarded the tie very quickly. NICE black pants (and the stupid belt-buckle discarded), and it was about as dressed up as Casey felt comfortable in. Black hair had been combed, but still fell messily, and he did know better than to wear his usual bandanna.
Which meant people who get close could see not only the faint scar on his right eyebrow, but possibly catch an even fainter scar on his forehead, that runs up under his hair and bangs. Also clearer without the hoodie and layers, Casey is lean but athletic. (Which should come as no surprise considering he's practically lived on the atrium's ice-rink trying to get a hockey game or similar going.)
1. Dance card.
Ok, finding the card in his pocket made him a bit puzzled. Someone better explain to him what a Dance Card is, and why it's used? Once he knows, Casey'll work on filling his up. Social guy, and while you might have to teach him to dance properly, he's game.
3. Snowballs
Didn't really matter who started it, but once Casey figures out there is the possibility of snowballs? He'll be trying to figure out how to recreate it. Stepping on snowflakes, and then gleefully engaging in snow-ball fights. Especially since they don't seem to harm the formal-wear.
4. Eat Drink and Be Merry
Ok, Casey hadn't really cared enough about school dances to tell whether this was like them or not. He DOES however know what is always talked about, so is eyeing the food and the punch warily. Doesn't mean he won't be found socializing around the food table.
7. Tick Tock
The clock was definitely out of place, and kept drawing his eye. Nor was he exactly one to not give in to his curiosity. Which meant when he got close enough, the case sprang open. "What the..."
Whatever it was was shapeless for a moment, before solidifying into a weird shape. It was a humanoid shape, in a black suit with tattoos on his arms. Resembling a famous asian actor but with sunglasses over his eyes, and exuding arrogance. Spiked rings on his knuckles, and Casey grimaced and backed up to start looking for a weapon.
Re: Casey Jones--Open to all (Other prompts can be requested too)
Thea playfully pulled Casey onto the floor for a very silly dance,"No need for formal with me you know!" her way of saying joking around was fine by her. He made her laugh when not much could make her smile as of late so she was going to return the favor.

Jace Herondale-Lightwood | Eat, drink, be sarcastically handsome.
He'd settled for a jacket that was a compromise and pants that were less of a compromise and more for hunting and training later. But they were both black and fit him nicely. He was still wearing his boots.
Jace headed straight for the food and punch bowl, the two most important items in the room at the moment, and would see about the rest later. For now he was in a fairly good mood considering all things.
Amaterasu | Okami | OTA (+1 special for Bob the skull)
This wasn't like any kind of dancing Amaterasu was familiar with, but she enjoyed it anyways. There was a formality to it that reminded her of the festival-dances held in the round, and yet it was not nearly so structured. More a round-dance between two people alone, rather than a group.
Nevertheless the Goddess-Wolf mingled and danced in her own way, more graceful than a normal animal certainly.
Eat, Drink, Be Merry
For a wolf (not really solely a wolf however), Ammy is able to hold her liquor quite well. The spiked-punch does not bother her at all. While she misses Mrs. Orange's cherry cakes, there are some pastries that are similar, but not. Definitely a berry flavor of some kind, and light enough that Ammy keeps stealing them discreetly from the table to nibble on them.
In the Dark of the Night
Normal darkness, Amaterasu had no problem with. Night was as much a part of the cycle of things as daytime. Goddess of the Sun she might be, but Night was not an enemy to her. Occasionally venturing away from the others though, and the dimmer light, made her worry. A low, querying whine, head-tilting as she tried to figure out why it was growing darker unnaturally.
Custom for Bob-the-skull (who's temporarily human)
Once the fae-man who writes on air does make an appearance, Ammy grins to herself and moves over towards him. Sitting patiently, waiting for his attention, with a smile on canine-face. A pleasure again, Bob-san.

Natasha Romanoff | OTA
Natasha had taken care choosing her outfit, with imput on color from Bruce. She did her hair as well. She can be found by the food, because even though she worked out she did love to eat. She is in a good mood tonight, and happy for the first time in a long time. She might even say yes to a dance or two.
[Dancing and Snow for Bruce]
There was really only one name that Natasha knew would be on her dance card was Bruce. She just fit into his arms like she belonged there. She was finally starting to believe that she did. She couldn't keep the smile off her face, as they twirled around the floor. She felt like she was floating.

Barry Allen l The Flash l
Barry didn't really want to dance. Felicity was gone and he wasn't in the mood, but the Library was the Library and it wasn't going to let him mope for too long. So here he was with a dance card in one hand waiting for his first partner.
[6]: In the Dark of the Night
Barry wandered away from the ball looking for a quiet moment and frowned as the lights started to dim. "Okay that's not good," he muttered to himself thoughtfully.
Re: Barry Allen l The Flash l
"Will I do Barry?" Thea was feeling just as lonely and knew she could at least be a little link to home for Barry. At least she could hope right? "Plus let's just say there's another things Queens have in common: we can't dance." trying for humor.

Bob l The Dresden Files
Bob was Fae and Winter Fae at that. This Ball was reminding him of the parties back home where his kind would eat and play for days to celebrate important millstones on the calendar year. So Bob was having a blast pelting people with snow balls and sending snow flakes swirling at couples he felt could use a little romantic boost.

The bubble of happiness that had nothing to do with the highly alcoholic punch might be why he didn't notice the snowball until he smacked into his head. The Doctor wasn't much of a dancer in this regeneration so rather than embarrassing himself he stayed near the food, poking at this or that with curious fingers and popping the stranger looking bits into his mouth with a happy sound.
Felicity Smoak
Felicity had been scarce over the last few weeks. Some might have even thought she went home, but she was just deep in the library doing research. She was like a sponge, and just soaked all the knowledge that the library had to offer up like a sponge. She felt awful though because she felt like she missed so much.
She was bound and determined to make it up to her boyfriend though so she chose a special dress for ball, and did her hair and make-up just for him.
She spotted him and made her way over, tapping his shoulder.
"May I have this dance?"
[Later.... Wallflower]
After spending time with Barry, and catching up.... Felicity needed some food, so she could be seen
grazingby the food tables. She is very friendly and social, just make sure not to touch her food. She feels like she hasn't eaten in weeks.no subject
